Prada - Foundation

Prada a Tope Foundation

We do not come here to invent. We come to remember what has always had value.

Firma Prada

Because one day, Prada realized that making wine was not enough.

It was necessary to protect what surrounds it and gives it meaning: the landscapes, the old vines, the villages that empty, the houses that fall down, the words that are almost forgotten. It was necessary to act before all this was erased in the name of progress.

This is how the Foundation was born: to defend and enhance the natural environment, to conserve and restore the rural and architectural heritage, and to promote a new way of life in our villages, more conscious and with a tangible and real sustainability.

We work to generate illusion, to preserve the identity of Bierzo and to value what is done well here, with respect, with roots and with quality.

We support those who cultivate, restore, care, teach, inspire.
We recognize those who set an example. And we create projects that not only protect the landscape, but also give a voice and a future to the people of the countryside.

We don't talk about conservation for conservation's sake. We talk about doing it to live better, so that El Bierzo remains a land with soul, with opportunities and with memory.

Golden Chestnut Awards

Every autumn, the Prada A Tope Foundation awards the Golden Chestnut, an award that recognizes people and institutions that contribute to a more lively, authentic and rooted Bierzo. It rewards those who protect the landscape and heritage, promote culture and the local economy, and keep alive the traditions that define us as a region.

In the 2025 edition, the award was granted to Dr. José Manuel Valle Folgueral, in recognition of his almost half century of career, his ability to innovate repertoires without losing his roots, and for proudly carrying the name of Bierzo beyond our borders.

Palacio de Canedo Architecture Awards

The "Oscars of the rural world of Bierzo".

We celebrate those who give life to our villages, maintaining their particular idiosyncrasy. Because traditional architecture does not only speak of stones: it speaks of memory, of family, of identity.

The Traditional Architecture Contest honors every year the restorations that give back dignity and future to the villages of El Bierzo. More than 100 award-winning projects -both public and private- that include houses, ovens, dovecotes, washhouses, wine presses, churches and communal spaces.

The didactic forest

A few steps from the Palace, the Didactic Forest is one of the greatest legacies of the Prada A Tope Foundation: a natural space with more than 50 species of trees, marked to learn, remember and take care of.
With almost 8 hectares, this rural botanical garden is designed to raise environmental awareness and connect with the earth through knowledge.

It is a living place that changes with each season and each visit. Open to the public all year round, it also welcomes educational centers, associations and groups who wish to learn more about their environment and learn how to preserve it.

Because planting a tree is to think about those who will come after.

Be part of this story

There are many ways to help keep El Bierzo alive. Some of them involve getting your hands dirty. Others, by trusting those who are already sowing. The Prada A Tope Foundation would not exist without those who believe in, collaborate with and support this way of seeing the world.
